Giveaway: What Shall I Wear?
Quite a while back, I wrote a little review of the classic guide to dressing by Claire McCardell titled What Shall I Wear?
At the time, many of you bemoaned the fact that it seemed to be out of print. Well, that is no longer the case!
The lovely folks at Overlook Press have sent me a brand new edition of this lively little book to give away to one of you. The new edition is just adorable, with the same original illustrations throughout, along with photos of Claire McCardell creations.
The prize
We’re giving away a copy of this new edition, plus a $25 Colette Patterns gift certificate to go with it, good for anything in our shop.
How to win
To enter the giveaway, just leave a comment telling me about your favorite piece of clothing right now (could be something you’ve made, or not).
I’ll draw a random winner on Friday, Feb 8 at noon PST and edit this post to announce the winner. The drawing is open to anyone and I will pay for shipping (though you may be responsible for duties in your own country, if applicable). Good luck!

My favorite at this moment is a black & gray animal print jacket. I like it because I can wear it with a lot of my clothes and it goes through the washer and dryer beautifully. Unfortunately it has not been cold enough for me to get a lot of wear out of it this winter.

My favorite at the moment is a gift from a friend….its a thick blue champion hoodie sweatshirt. She found it at a local local shop that sells clothes used on TV shows – this hoodie is from the show Friday Night Lights and says WEST across it in yellow letters. She knew how much we loved the show and it’s such a warm broken in cozy sweatshirt I end up wearing it at home when the mornings or nights get too chilly.

This book looks looks wonderful. My favorite pieces of clothing at the moment are a lacy blue and white Wacoal bra and matching panty I splurged on with a Macy’s gift card. The gift card brought my out-of-pocket expense down to what my regular Vanity Fair basics cost. They aren’t for every day, but I feel less dowdy just having them in the drawer.

Right now my favorite is my pair of cabled, metallic flecked fingerless gloves. They extend fromknuckles to elbow and keep me warm on days like today. Since I knitted them, they fit like, well, a glove!

My favorite piece of clothing is a vintage haori I bought at, of all places, the Santa Fe flea market some years ago. I wear it with both dress slacks and jeans – over a blouse or a turtleneck or a tank- depending on the season.

My favorite piece of clothing right now is my dark red corderoy skirt. It is a skirt of many firsts:first pattern bought online:Sewaholic 1101. First skirt with a waistband..and a pieced waistband , at that ! First skirt that looks amazing inside and out because I did french seams throughout. And first skirt I did a muslin for, marked the fit changes, then made perfectly the very first fit ! I am very proud of it, plus it’s cute, and looks great with my red-striped tee I found at a consignment shop and my boots !

A velvet top that used to be a dress that I loved, but it hung in the wardrobe for ages because it had a small cigarette burn in it (grrr, smokers!) Then I had the (admittedly simple) idea to cut it down & wear it as a top (the hole was at the bottom). It’s so comfy, that, when it gets worn out, I may be tempted to unpick it & use it as a pattern (or try & start a new fashion for patches…) Love your site, it’s so inspirational

I’ve gone a little crazy for Valentine’s day this year and my favorite item of clothing is the new Valentine’s Day dress I just finished making!
It is a cute little Cynthia Rowley number- nothing too fancy (I’m not an advanced sewer at all). It has a short flared skirt with pleats. A simple scoop top; sleevelss. The outer fabric is light, pink corduroy with white hearts. I lined it with a light cotton that has pink polka dots. The inside is as scrumptious as the outside!
I’m lucky that the winter is so mild here in California, after I pop on a little cardigan, belt, and kitten heels I am ready to go out and Valentinize the world!

My favorite piece of clothing right now is a dress I found at a second hand store. It has cap sleeves, a slight boat neck, princess seams and is made of white cotton fabric with red and fuschia watercolor poppies. It fits me perfectly and the bright flowers do wonders to perk up my mood. I’ve been wearing it with aqua tights and a navy cardigan. I would love a copy of the book your are giving away :)

Favorite pieces of clothing in the winter are hard because it is miserably cold and I just wear as many layers as possible. Indiana is so cold right now so my favorite piece is my cocoon coat made with a royal purple wool cloth. Its so light and has great shape but withstands those blustery days. Its the one piece that makes me feel sheik even though I’m completely covered by my hat, mittens, boots, slicker, and big scarf. Its one big warm hug.

My favorite piece of clothing is a knit dress I made 2 or 3 years ago. It’s a simple kimono sleves not very fitted dress. I wear it with a belt. I love the material wich is a quite heavy organic hemp and cotton knit very easy to sew since it doesn’t strech a lot.
I wear it all year round and a made some litlle sisters to ths dress but not one is a good as the first one!!!

Hmm, I think my favourite garment right now (other than my boyfriend’s housecoat – so cozy!) is my fuzzy knit cardigan. It’s burgundy, my favourite colour right now, has pockets and a huge floppy collar, and so well loved I’m probably going to have to retire it soon. :(

Right now my fave thing to wear is the no.2 drape top (made up as a dress) from drape drape 2. It is very warm in Melbourne and this dress made up in a red and white, very soft and light cotton jersey is keeping me cool and comfortable.

Yummy giveaway!
My favourite thing to wear right now is a comfy cowl neck grey jersey dress I made from an adapted Burda Style pattern. I added pintucks to the back pattern piece to adjust the loose fit but the geometric shape of the pintuck pattern adds some interest as well. The grey jersey was meant for a jacket I’m making for my husband, but it was so deliciously soft and supple I couldn’t resist ;-) Luckily the store had more in stock!

I had a baby a little over a year ago and have since transitioned from working full-time to being an at-home mom. I’m still having a hard time striking a balance in my wardrobe between more formal garments that make me feel pretty, and casual clothes that allow me me the range of motion needed to chase after my little girl all day. At the moment, I’d have to say that my most-worn garment is a sleeveless summer dress with a full skirt and ruching at the back bodice. I throw a cardigan over top and feel “dressed” but still comfortable.

Currently my favorite piece of clothing are a pair of jeans from the Gap (I know, of all places). I love them because jeans are the hardest thing on earth to find the perfect fit for! These jeans don’t stretch out and give me that weird saggy butt look at the end of the day. My favorite piece of clothing right now is the wearable muslin button-down shirt I just finished. It’s my first time sewing a dress-shirt style, and I had to use all kinds of new skills like making a yoke, front placket, collar stand, etc. It turned out pretty well considering I had to try so many new things and it really boosted my confidence on tackling more complicated sewing projects! Now to make one out of the schmancy chambray I bought!

A few months ago I made a simple top, copied from one I bought at a sample sale. It’s made of thick, dark grey organic cotton interlock that I got from a remnants box at a long-since-closed-down eco-textiles shop, and it’s quite loose, with long raglan sleeves and a big cowl neck. So cosy, and pleasingly not homemade-looking. Plus it was really quick and easy to make – I’ll be repeating it!

My favourite item right now is my mother’s vintage black mini skirt, which I saved from the bin. The skirt is velvet black and has tiny shiny (also in black) leaves and roses embroidery on it. I love the sturdy quality, none of that high priced but low quality products we have nowadays. I usually mix it with one of my many geek tees or a blouse with a cardigan and some crazy tights.

My favourite piece right now is a rain jacket. Here in Vancouver, we are practically ‘famous’ for our rain. This cute jacket is by an Irish designer. It’s got a slim silhouette, a slightly puffy bubble hem, and lots of pretty pockets!!!! All in a pretty, dusky pink. Goes well with skirts or jeans!

Oh, wow! I would love to own this book, being a fan of her clothes and style for years. My favorite item of clothing is my chocolate brown wool Issey Miyake coat that I made from a Vogue pattern when I was in high school. Still gorgeous and even though the construction isn’t as complicated as his designs could be, it makes me proud and is definitely a head-turner of a garment.

This question actully made me realize that I am really not satisfied with a great deal of my wardrobe, at least right now. However,I do have a real favorite right now, and that is my thermal leggings. So comfy and warm, with enough merino to keep them really comfy.
In warm weather, my favorite garment is a cotton knit skirt with a yoga pant style foldover waistband. I own several, I love them so much.

My all-time favorite piece of clothing is still my wedding dress. It is so smooth and long, with the luster of a sea-shell. It is actually an evening dress, so I might still get to wear it again someday, if the right formal occasion comes up. I had to wait over half an hour in the cold biting wind for a bus tonight, so my favourite garment is a lovely thick hand knitted scarf today.
Second it’s my Pastille dress of course x
