Giveaway: What Shall I Wear?
Quite a while back, I wrote a little review of the classic guide to dressing by Claire McCardell titled What Shall I Wear?
At the time, many of you bemoaned the fact that it seemed to be out of print. Well, that is no longer the case!
The lovely folks at Overlook Press have sent me a brand new edition of this lively little book to give away to one of you. The new edition is just adorable, with the same original illustrations throughout, along with photos of Claire McCardell creations.
The prize
We’re giving away a copy of this new edition, plus a $25 Colette Patterns gift certificate to go with it, good for anything in our shop.
How to win
To enter the giveaway, just leave a comment telling me about your favorite piece of clothing right now (could be something you’ve made, or not).
I’ll draw a random winner on Friday, Feb 8 at noon PST and edit this post to announce the winner. The drawing is open to anyone and I will pay for shipping (though you may be responsible for duties in your own country, if applicable). Good luck!

Great giveaway! My favourite piece of clothing at the moment is a bordeaux red dress I bought in Australia a year ago. It’s pretty, comfortable, fit for work and warm enough for winter. It’s a shame Australia is so far away, otherwise I would’ve gone back to that store and bought another one in a different colour! Oh well, as soon as I find the right fabric for it, I’ll try and recreate it.

My favorite at the moment is an awesome black velvet blazer my parents gave me for Christmas. Its actually a full black velvet suit, but that is a bit too ostentatious for day wear as a graduate student ; )

My favorite piece of clothing right now is a leather trench from AllSaints. It’s brown leather and has a cowl neck and asymmetrical closure, and while it’s still too cold to wear it, I’m waiting impatiently for the weather to warm up just a little more. Where is the spring?!?!

My favourite piece of clothing is actually something I haven’t made yet (but am aching to get started, just as soon as I can get my sewing machine out of storage!) – a classic, 50s style dress with a fitted top and full skirt. I’m so bored of dull, heavy winter clothes and looking forward to cute summer dresses again – every morning I wish 1) that it were a little sunnier and warmer and 2) I had already made the dress so I could wear it! It’s going to be a really lovely seaside patterned fabric. Only a few weeks til I’m reunited with my machine and I can get going!!

Please throw my name in the hat! I’d love to read that book, plus a gift card to make a Colette pattern!! My favorite all time piece of clothing is my wedding dress, which i got to wear last year =). I’ve been planning to sell it, but i can’t seem to part with it. Plus it’s by far the most expensive piece of clothing i’ve ever owned, and i had it altered for a custom fit (no way that i could’ve done the alterations on that myself). Thank you for the giveaway!

My favorite-
A simple,pleated blue paisley skirt in the apron, wrap-around style. It has gloriously huge pockets, ties in the front, and I made it in a day out of scrap fabric someone had given me! A totally free, and satisfying project.

Every first Friday art walk, I unintentially dress in the same “going out” outfit, which consists of my Colette Iris shorts in a black wool with red buttons and Swedish folk art pockets over a pair of sassy tights. My favorite piece of clothing is probably my denim skirt I made with an old McCalls pattern. It’s a full skirt, which I love, and it’s made from pretty dark blue denim. But my favorite part are the pockets: they’re made from I Love Lucy fabric. Nobody notices but me, but it’s like a nice secret that I’m carrying around my favorite TV show in my pockets. :)

As we’ve entered the deepest reaches of winter here in the Midwest, my favorite item is the sweater. I pile them over jean skirts, leggings, even my pjs. I may be daydreaming about flowery dresses, but I’m doing from deep within a wool cocoon. :)

Not to be a kiss ***, but my favorite piece of clothing right now really is my Lily! I have been sewing for about a year, so the Lily pattern was something I had to work up to. My favorite piece of clothing right now is an emerald green sweater I ordered from Boden. I love the color, the slightly oversized but still flattering shape, and the lovely buttons on the shoulder. I wear it with slim jeans or khaki Clover pants (another favorite of mine) and leopard print ballet flats. Now that I can sew, I find that a ready-to-wear piece has to be really special (and probably something I could not or would not make) to be a favorite, and this sweater definitely fits the bill.

My favorite is the Sorbetto top. It is amazing versatile! It goes with my jeans, skirts, with a cardigan, without a cardigan. Depending on the fabric and color of choice, it can be worn both at work and play.

Favorite now is a skirt I bought on sale. It’s simple, but so versatile, as its reversible. One side is a blue print, while the other is a green /black print. It’s definitely a wardrobe extender and it travels well for business.

My favorite article of clothing at the moment is a long sleeve scoop-neck Renfrew tee shirt I made. I cut the body extra long and hemmed it instead of using the band, and added a tiny pocket that I refer to as my “fifty-cent pocket” since the only thing it will hold is two quarters!

I think my favorite piece of clothing right now would be a simple button down blouse. I have been struggling to lose the remaining weight from my last pregnancy, and this top is so slimming! It has darts in just the right places, cute detail on the 3/4 length sleeves. Very feminine but simple enough to be worn with just about anything!

What a fantastic giveaway! Thanks S! My current favourite piece of clothing is my new winter coat. I bought it last November. It is a Pendleton Portland coat so the material has a white pattern on a black background resembling a Pendleton blanket. The fit is fantastic and the coat is super warm. Best purchase ever!

Seems like a very interesting book! My favorite piece of clothing right now is probably a pair of skinny sweatpants that I made last autumn. I spend a lot of time at home with my twins and you just have to wear something comfortable when you’re crawling on the floor etc. There’s definitely other things I would like to be my favorites, though!

My favorite piece of clothing is my long sleeved hand sewn knit dress. The silver gray background is broken up with primitive black designs. It fits wonderfully well and moves easily as I sit, stand and walk. I feel so confident in this dress. I can dress it up for business with black accessories or fun with a splash of bright red.

my favorite piece of clothing is a pair of shoes. They are a lovely vintage style t-strap shoe with a low heel. I love them. I love them because no matter how fat i feel on a given day, how out of sorts i can slip my feet into these shoes, smile, feel pretty and know that as i buckle their dainty buckle that i will be ok. That today might even be a good day. Maybe that’s a lot to put into a pair of shoes, but it works. Every time i wear them my day gets better.

My very favorite piece of clothing is just barely even clothing! I’m teaching myself how to sew my own knickers, and I’ve been scouring Goodwills for vintage lingerie that is too beat up/inelastic/stained in places to be worn as-is, but which has fabric and trim that I can salvage to sew into underwear. It’s so fun! And I have been loving every pair I make because they fit me like they were made for me. Because they were.

Right now my favorite piece of clothing would have to be this red dress I picked up recently from the Banana Republic. it is just the right shade of red. It has a cowlish kind of neck and POCKETS. My favorite piece of clothing is a lightweight coat I made from some amazing sale fabric I picked up on a whim. I would describe it as an abstract ikat pattern with wide brushstrokes of black, blue and gold. I lined in a glossy blue satin. I love it and get so many compliments on it from total strangers. My favourite right now is a blouse I made, my first piece of clothing I’m actually proud of. Unfortunately my sewing machine broke down the very first seam, so I made it by hand. It is a mustard yellow to with white polka dots, Peter Pan collar and white lace at the top half of the back. Absolutely love it, first since it is my very own design and second because I didn’t let a broken sewing machine stop me from crafting. Now the sewing machine is fixed, so I would love some new, cute patterns to try out.

My favourite piece of clothing right now has been a favourite for a couple of years now. It began it’s lifetime in my wardrope as a dress I didn’t quite know what to do about and so I forgot about it. It’s an old black silk dress, probably an underdress from a french fleamarket and I’ve tried to customize it a lot of times, but it never really got further than needles and a thought. One day however, I took it out of the closet, put it on and tied a belt around my waist. I’ve loved it eversince and I dare not think of the day when it’s not there anymore… A friend has promised to bring home raw silk from India this spring, maybe I’ll manage to make new one that falls just like my old black silk dress.

A full-length patchwork skirt I made from old shirts my boyfriend discarded. It’s beautiful in all blues and browns, long enough to hide long underwear (it’s still pretty cold here in Atlanta) and a much more feminine alternative to sweatpants to wear around the house or while traveling.

My favorite piece of clothing right now is a boat neck tee with elbow-length sleeves I made out of a black and white striped stretch lace a few weeks ago. It’s not too sheer, it’s super soft and comfortable, and it went into immediate heavy rotation in my wardrobe. It goes with every single skirt and pair of pants I own, and I can wear it anywhere. I will wear this shirt until it is in tatters, I love it so much.

My favourite clothing at the moment is a pair of black zip up calf length boots, I’ve hardly had them off my feet in a year (it has been raining a lot in the UK). The reason I like them so much is they fit my calves, they are DUO boots which are sold by foot length and calf size…love em to bits !

My favorite piece of clothing is the top (yes, just the top) of my cool embrace pj’s from Soma. Great vintage style, not scratchy – and when I’m wearing it, I know I’m going to be relaxing at home. And it looks nice enough (and modest enough) that with yoga pants or jeans, I can still meet the UPS guy at the door when he delivers my crafty supplies!

My favorite piece of clothing right now is a purple cardigan that keeps me warm and goes with many of my tops. I gained some weight going back to school (hint: if you plan to return to school after those years where you can eat anything and not gain weight, it is absolutely necessary to budget time for exercise and necessary to watch calories) and this sweater has been a good friend while I get my body back.

My favourite me-made piece of clothing is my lovely postbox red wool cape, with fur collar – I feel like little red riding hood in it!
My favourite bought piece of clothing at the moment is my wedding dress. It’s currently hanging up in the hall (in a garment bag) and I have to walk past it every day (agony!). Occasionally I unzip the bag and have a peak in….only 5 months to go until I get to wear it!

I am just finishing a maxi dress with buttons the whole way up the front. The drape of the rayon is so flattering and comfy and the ikat print is right in style- I am in love with the fabric! Love reading these little posts every day :)

Since it’s been cold and wet, my current favorite piece of clothing is an older pair of jeans. They’re stretched and shrunk just about right to be extra comfortable.

I abosolutely LOVE a chiffon cami I found at TJ Maxx for $1!! The fabric is printed with little flowers, it has tucks down the front, and lace on the straps. It’s BEAUTIFUL and makes me feel very feminine even when I wear it with jeans.
