Giveaway: What Shall I Wear?

cover-what-shall-i-wear

Quite a while back, I wrote a little review of the classic guide to dressing by Claire McCardell titled What Shall I Wear?

At the time, many of you bemoaned the fact that it seemed to be out of print. Well, that is no longer the case!

The lovely folks at Overlook Press have sent me a brand new edition of this lively little book to give away to one of you. The new edition is just adorable, with the same original illustrations throughout, along with photos of Claire McCardell creations.

The prize

We’re giving away a copy of this new edition, plus a $25 Colette Patterns gift certificate to go with it, good for anything in our shop.

How to win

To enter the giveaway, just leave a comment telling me about your favorite piece of clothing right now (could be something you’ve made, or not).

I’ll draw a random winner on Friday, Feb 8 at noon PST and edit this post to announce the winner. The drawing is open to anyone and I will pay for shipping (though you may be responsible for duties in your own country, if applicable). Good luck!

ETA: Congratulations to our winner, Ellen! Thanks for participating, everyone. There will be more giveaways to come!

My husband’s granfather was a man who valued craftsmanship and who had excellent taste. I inherited a pair of dark brown wool flannel pants from him. They look good with just about everything, they’re comfortable in a wide range of temperatures and I rarely have to clean them.

My favorite piece of clothing right now is a pair of jeans I bought at the Gap 5 or 6 years ago. I didn’t wear them much for a while but they’re perfectly broken in, perfectly half-faded from the original dark wash, and unbelievably flattering!

I love how interactive your business is! This is a great idea.

My favorite garment right now is a black, draped skirt with pockets and waistband, made from a medium-weight jersey. It cinches in my waist, making any outfit with it look pulled together. It is amazingly comfortable and versatile; I wear it at least once a week!

My favourite piece of clothing right now is a vintage wool dress I recently bought at a local consignment store. It is a shift dress from the 60’s, I believe. It is baby pink, with black velvet piping around the sleeves and bottom of the skirt. I am looking forward to wearing it on my birthday in March!

My favorite item of clothing at the moment is honestly a pair of thick leggings. They are indispensable in the winter time if you love wearing dresses but, like me, live in Wisconsin. It’s not a very glamorous favorite item but I would be very unhappy without them!

February 6, 2013 #

My favorite piece of clothing is not actually mine. Well, I guess it’s mine now – it was my mother’s.
I can only imagine that she once bemoaned what to wear and made this dress. She would have made it in the early 50s and she was a seamstress in Europe at the time. It’s a beautiful coral silk party dress with a full pleated skirt, fitted midriff, wide neckline and cap sleeves that are seamed in the most interesting way. If only I were 8 inches shorter! At some point I’d like to copy the dress without destroying her couture handiwork and size it up for myself.

What a great giveaway! At the moment, my favourite garment is the pink coat I made for this winter. I love the bright fuschia colour, the warm wool, the luxurious touch of the silk lining and the great tailoring and pattern making that went into that coat. The fact that I spent a lot of time and special care to make it also make it my favourite item. And it lights up any grey morning…

My favorite item of clothing is a dress I made for a friend’s wedding recently. It was just a McCall’s pattern, but there is a small gathering at my natural waist that fit my curves perfectly and the straps make a “v” in the back. I made it with a beautiful Japanese voile with colorful flowers on a peachy background.

At the moment, my favorite thing to wear are a pair of casual, lightweight, dark khaki cropped pants. They fit perfectly and I can dress them up or down depending on the top, shoes and accessories I wear with them. They’re the most comfortable pair of pants I’ve ever bought and didn’t have to do any alterations to them! Thanks for hosting the giveaway! :)

I bought a vintage green crushed-velvet coat about ten years ago. I mostly wear it for special occasions, but this year I found myself without a winter coat, so I’ve been wearing the green one. It gets compliments all the time! Apparently it brings out the green in my eyes.

My current favourite is a bright red leopard print shirtdress I just finished making. It ended up a little shorter than I wanted thanks to a seam-ripper incident, but it’s actually quite a nice change! I used a full 3 widths of fabric pleated into the skirt so it’s lovely and full, and I love the bright print.

I LOVE that you’re giving away this book <3 ! Seems like such a great way to keep the sewing "heritage" alive. I'm very new to sewing clothes and just made my first bias cut skirt last month and I just adore it. It fits me perfect and is flattering for my figure – what more could a girl ask for? I can't wait to make more!!

My favorite clothing item is a hot pink jersey maxi dress that I purchased last year from the gap. It is comfortable and flattering. I can’t wait until the warm weather returns so that I may wear it again (I live in Texas, so warm weather will be returning soon!). I fully intend to copy this dress in pattern form so that I can make it in several colors.

Thank you for hosting the giveaway!

My favourite piece of clothing right now is a cape in camel-coloured wool. It’s long enough in the “sleeves” that I don’t get cold, it stops even the peskiest of winds, and it flows beautifully when I walk. It even has a sewn-in scarf.

If shoes were included I’d say my brown Aigle wellingtons, though. It’s a completely unglamorous answer, but they are soft and comfortable like no other pair of wellingtons I’ve ever owned, they’re pretty enough that I can go into town in them without feeling silly, they perfectly match my gloves, and the details are really cool… like, the insides are purple, which you get the tiniest glimpse of at the calf slit. They weren’t cheap, but they’re perfectly country chic (and I really do live in the country).

My current favorite is a top I’m working on right now. It’s a basic button up collared shirt, made out of a soft flannel with a print of Tiki masks all over it :) I love that it has a tropical print, but is a cool weather shirt. I’m going home to Oregon for a visit in a few weeks and plan to take it with me to keep me cozy!

What a great give away. My current favorite right now is a recently finished knitting project, Rocky Coast Cardigan by Hannah Fettig. I made it in the ivory “Tundra” color in the yarn called for. Rarely do I follow a pattern that closely. The best part – I can even wear it with my Colette Hazel dress (an abstract large peacock print in soft blues).

My favorite piece of clothing right now is my wedding dress. I got married this past October in the gown that my grandmother and mom were wed in. It was handmade in upstate New York in 1959 by a very talented seamstress. My mom and I both changed a few details, but the dress is pretty much the same as the original. It’s an heirloom that I will always cherish.

Ooh, sounds like a fun book! I’d love to throw my name in the bucket :)

My current favorite piece of clothing is also my newest piece – a pair of jeans. I didn’t make them, but they’re a local designer (Imogene + Willie), which should count for something :) They were totally, ridiculously expensive, but surprisingly worth every penny. I’ve never owned a pair of jeans that fit so well, and as a result I’ve worn them every single day for the past 2 weeks (and thrown out all my other pairs).

My favorite piece of clothing is a flannel shirt with southwestern-inspired stripe pattern. My then-boyfriend and I bought it at Euro Disney on my 25th birthday in 1992 and I got married wearing it (Vegas, baby!!!) two years later. I’ve worn my “wedding flannel” for many many years and it is too worn out on the cuffs and collar to wear now, but it proudly hangs in closet, waiting for the day that I use the fabric to make something else out of it.

I am so excited to have found your site! I’ve been trying to decide which pattern to buy first.

Right now my favorite piece of clothing is a pair of jeans I bought and altered to actually *finally* have some jeans that fit me. I’ve been wearing them almost exclusively the past few weeks! Dark wash, nice wide leg, and actually a waist that fits MY waist, it’s amazing!

February 6, 2013 #

Hm. My favorite item of clothing is a pair of jeans that I bought four years ago. . .that were far too small. I felt victorious even getting the zipper up. I would wear them for quick around-the-block errands, even though they looked like sausage casing and weren’t hemmed, and now they look atrocious from the ankle down. I finally found some shame and shelved them a couple years ago, only to try them back on a few months ago to realize that lo, they fit perfectly. Better than any pair of jeans I’ve ever had, hands down. Surprise volume loss and surprise fit made for a winning pair.

Sarai, what an awesome giveaway!!! It’s hard to think of a favorite piece right now. I had a baby in November and I am so not back to my normal wardrobe, but I bought this gorgeous knit cardigan that has a lace cutout detail in the back, and that has to be my favorite piece. It makes me feel so cute and feminine when I wear it? I also bought a bold polka dot scarf that I am in love with.

Thank you!!

Hi Sarai,
The piece of clothing I love the most is an old, old Smartwool pullover. Not really a sweater per se, but a lightweight knit that just takes the chill off alone, or is good for layering. I have various weights of fleece items that work in the same fashion, but this top seems to be warmer and more comfortable. I purchased it at what I thought was a horrendous price at an end-of-season sale at a local ski shop when Smartwool items first arrived from New Zealand. Being able to throw it into the washing machine was a bonus too. It must be at least 15 years old and with regular use and laundering it now has a wonderful patina and feeling. I haven’t been able to re-create anything like this with my sewing efforts. Yet!

Right now I love my high waisted shorts. I made the pattern to fit from a vintage one and have made them over and over in different fabrics. I wear them over tights in the winter. I recently dug up a boxy, black and white striped, silk shirt from my mom’s old closet and cannot stop wearing it. She’s a reality show-worthy hoarder and has saved every piece of clothing she has ever owned since she immigrated to Canada when she was 17. I’ve been picking from her closet since I was a teenager and cannot believe that I’ve overlooked this jem all these years. It’s truly amazing to realize how my taste has evolved over the years through each piece I “discover” .

My favourite piece of clothing at the moment is RTW, but I love it! It’s a cobalt blue sheath dress with a high collar, interesting belt loops (I don’t even know how to desribe them) and exactly the understated elegance I love so much! And it’s fully lined, with sleeves, which means I can wear it to work without bothering with a cardigan. And on top of that it looks like something from the early 60s, late 50s… I adore it!
