Giveaway! The Sewtionary

giveaway-sewtionary

I have a sizable collection of sewing books, most of them 50+ years old.

Most of them just sit on the shelf and are only pulled out when I want to grab a little inspiration. The books I turn to again and again are the reference books, the ones you can pull out whenever you’re stuck and find exactly what you’re looking for. They are like trusted friends, always there to help you out of a jam.

Tasia (of Sewaholic) has written just such a book. The Sewtionary is packed with 101 different sewing techniques, all illustrated with clear photos and understandable instruction.

sewtionary-giveaway02

sewtionary-giveaway03

This is an ideal reference book for a beginner, but I think it would be handy for intermediate sewists as well! Want to add a welt pocket to a dress you’re making? Want to change up the type of zipper you’re using? Need a reminder about padstitching? It’s all covered.

How to do a FBA and adjust the bodice length! I am a beginner and am about to move from sewing for the bottom half, and I need to reference that to the tiniest detail. I can’t get away with not doing it (this is the whole reason why I got into sewing clothes!) but it’s so daunting.

Claire

September 12, 2014 #

Plackets! I never remember how to do that! I like plackets, that’s a cool detail but quite painful to sew!

I’d say doing a zipper.

However how to insert zips while lining a skirt is my number one look up at the moment.

I always need to look up the various ways to install zippers. I also need hand-holding for pockets. I’m also always on the lookout for faster, easier ways to do things.

Understitching a facing! I always have to look up instructions on which way to press and which side of the seam to stitch. Even though once I see the instructions it is so obvious!!

I can’t say that there is any one technique that I look up over and over but I often find that I I have a hand full that I use over and over and never really try anything new. I am self taught and so once I find something that works I stick with it. I am learning a lot from your hem series right now…

Darcy

September 12, 2014 #

I find myself looking up different hems constantly. I sometimes get stuck in a hem rut and do the same one over and over until I find a new favorite haha!

Anoriell

September 13, 2014 #

I’m a beginner in the sense of ‘at the very beginning’. Very. Beginning. I’m at the stage of still looking up my machine manual to make sure I threaded it right. You know. Just in case. With three very small projects under my belt, everything is new and needs to be looked up. But I can say that the next step will be installing a zipper. That should be interesting!

Tomboy

I know I mostly know how to put in invisible zippers. But half-way through, I alway whether I really did it right! Then I run to internet, check again for the technique, feel better about what I’m doing and keep going. I’d say Tasia’s book would be great to “hold my hand” while I’m sewing, helping me feel more confident!

It’s something with zippers. The occasional bulking, and possibility of ruining a good piece of work. Which foot, and the fabric.. fold this or that way? I always have to look it up. In my former sewing life I would gladly choose another closing-option than a zipper, but these days.. head on! After years off sewing, I am enjoying the whole process again! I would love to win this lovely book, thank you for offering!

I have a hard time getting rid of books too. I have an even harder time getting rid of reference books. They never go out of print when they are sitting on my shelf. I pick them up at book stores and thrift shops even if I already have a copy. It’s nice to pass on copies and share. It’s like giving the gift of inspiration. Pity so many publishers rush to remainder their publications. Like vintage cook books, sometimes just a quick peruse is enough to trigger a germ of an idea, and from there I can go off flying…

Zippers have it hands down everytime!

Jaclyn

I’m always checking my Reader’s Digest sewing guide for things like how to measure for buttonholes and which hand stitches work best in which situation. Also how to sew knits on my plain old 1960s Sears Kenmore machine…haven’t yet found a method to love, though my stretch stitch seems to work fine for everything except hemming.

Is it ok to say all techniques? Because really, I am a very beginner sewer. I cut out the pieces for the next dress I want to make, but not have it hibernating because it needs an invisible zip and I am afraid to try that. And all those techniques you listed I have never even heard of! So this book would be such a good resource!

I would love to own the Sewtionary book. I have returned to sewing for too many years to quote. I have to look “Everything” up and I can’t believe how many constructions ways have changed. This book would be my go-to for anything you need to know to construct a garment.
