Giveaway! The Sewtionary
I have a sizable collection of sewing books, most of them 50+ years old.
Most of them just sit on the shelf and are only pulled out when I want to grab a little inspiration. The books I turn to again and again are the reference books, the ones you can pull out whenever you’re stuck and find exactly what you’re looking for. They are like trusted friends, always there to help you out of a jam.
Tasia (of Sewaholic) has written just such a book. The Sewtionary is packed with 101 different sewing techniques, all illustrated with clear photos and understandable instruction.
This is an ideal reference book for a beginner, but I think it would be handy for intermediate sewists as well! Want to add a welt pocket to a dress you’re making? Want to change up the type of zipper you’re using? Need a reminder about padstitching? It’s all covered.
Giveaway
Tasia has generously agreed to give away one copy of The Sewtionary today.
To win, leave a comment below letting me know one technique that you find yourself looking up often. I’ll choose a winner at random (using the random number generator) on Wednesday, Sept 17. Good luck!
ETA: Comments are now closed, thanks for entering! The winner is Danica!

I’m mostly self-taught (does learning on the internet count as instruction?) so many technical names for patterns send me scrambling to look things up. I’m currently obsessed with learning how to sew the best button holes every, my machine’s ‘one step buttonhole’ function doesn’t seem to be working properly. I also always forget the difference between a slip stitch vs blind hem stitch so little things like that would be useful to look up!

I am continuously shown up by simple zipper installations. Without fail, I manage to do one side (at least) wrong in one way or another, and have to tediously unpick it. Then again, I still fear buttonholes, so maybe I’m just closure-phobic.

Flat felled seams, unless I’ve made one in the recent (let’s say 3 months) past I always need a refresher (I use online tutorials or Colette Sewing Book). I hope, one day, to be sewing on a regular enough basis to only require reference materials for really cool couture linings, but alas, not in foreseeable future.

Not double dipping, but on zippers: an advanced beginner I was in a sewing workshop with said she overcame her zipper phobias, and presumably amnesia, by making zippered makeup bag sized bags until she had that sense of mastery. Using her scraps and those lovely fat quarters us non-quilters are always trying to come up with uses for, she gave them as gifts and became a senseii of all zippers. I thought that was pretty brilliant.

JOHN 12:44-50 44 And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. 45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. 49 For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”
Just wanted to share the word of God with you or anyone reading today and I pray that if you don’t know JESUS CHRIST as Lord and Savior that you will seek Him and REPENT of your sins and give your life to Him today. He died on the cross to pay for our sins so that we don’t have to. He died for us and took the punishment we deserved as sinners against God so that we would not have to endure hell. And He did so because He loves us. And I pray again that today you will leave sin behind and give Christ a chance in your life. He is the only way to eternal life(heaven) and He is waiting with open arms for you. God bless :o)

Seam finishes! Still haven’t been able to find out the best way to finish princess seams in an unlined bodice, and I’m not sure what is best for an armscye/sleeve cap seam in a sheer-ish fabric. And I guess I can manage fly openings if a pattern is holding my hand for every step, but I don’t exactly UNDERSTAND what I’m doing so much as trust that it’s going to come out right.

I pretty much look up all the techniques I think I will need for a project. I am far from couture standard but a single reference point for the best of the tried and tested methods would be great.
