Colette Book Club: Reminder

Only three weeks ‘til the first Colette Book Club discussion!

A couple weeks ago, we introduced you to the Colette Book Club, an online book club that explores the meaning and making of clothing. We’ll be discussing our first book, The Forgotten Seamstress by Liz Trenow, on February 15. There’s just three weeks left to find and read the book.

How it works

1) Find a copy of our current book, “The Forgotten Seamstress”by Liz Trenow. It’s available in bookstores or at your local library. It’s downloadable in most e-reader formats and as an audiobook. There’s even a free Kindle preview so you can try the first four chapters for free.

2) Read the book. If you want to chat about it while you’re reading, use the hashtag #colettebookclub on Twitter.

3) Come back to the Colette blog on Feb 15 to talk about the book and learn which book is next.

Book 1: The Forgotten Seamstress

Our first book is The Forgotten Seamstress, a lovely novel by Liz Trenow that will delight mystery lovers, textile nerds and fans of Downton Abbey.

This novel tells two stories. The first concerns Caroline Meadows, a 38-year-old Londoner. Caroline is a little depressed—her life is okay, but it’s not working out the way she planned. Then she discovers a beautiful quilt in her mother’s attic. The impeccably worked quilt presents a mystery: no one in Caroline’s family sewed it, and it contains patches of an exquisite century

I am 30% through the book. Engaging plot. Easy to read. Giving me some great hand sewing day dreams. Looking forward to Feb 15 ☺

Finished it this past weekend. I hadn’t heard of it before it was mentioned here, but I really enjoyed it.

I read it last weekend, I enjoyed it.

Absolutely loved this book! Never would have heard of it or thought to read it if I had! Can’t wait to hear what the next book will be!!

Absolutely hooked after reading the free Kindle preview! A sewing mystery, what’s not to love!!

January 22, 2016 #

I somehow missed this, just ordered the book. I love this idea, two of my favorite things!

January 22, 2016 #

I am about half way through and really enjoying this book!

Just got it as an e-book from my library. It’s hard for me to read anything but student work and short articles during the academic year, but I’m willing to give it a try.

This one is a pretty fast read! It’s shorter than a lot of other books I’ve looked at for the book club, and the plot moves pretty quickly, too.

Will try as I love book chat. I’m currently reading for my RL book club ‘Clothes Clothes Clothes Music Music Music Boys Boys Boys’ which also contains much about clothes-making, though not perhaps of the office-presentable kind!

I am looking this up right now. Can’t resist a title like that!

This is a delightful and engaging story. Thank you for suggesting it. Am looking forward to the discussion whilst having something to sew in hand :-)

I finished it last week. It was my first time reading an e-book, so without the thickness of the pages as an indicator of progress, I was really surprised at how quickly the ending came and was sad to part with the characters. This will also be my first book club. Looking forward to it!

I am 3/4 of the way and I’m in love – sitting on a plane traveling home wanting to get to get to my quilt that is in progress – I can’t wait to see how the book ends?

I enjoyed the plot and the characters. The sewing part was like frosting on the cake. I found myself fascinated with David a.k.a. King Edward and looked him up on Google. He wasn’t a very nice man according to what I read I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually did seduce a few innocent women servants. Looking forward to the next book!

I just had the book delivered to me 3 ďays ago. Glad you had the reminder for the book club. Enjoyed the comments thus far. Will be a pleasure to talk again.

Delightful. I started reading on a Sunday afternoon and couldn’t put it down.

January 22, 2016 #

Started reading this morning before work and loving it, I’ll be reading at lunch time too!

January 24, 2016 #

Picked this book up yesterday from the Library, and I’m about a third of the way through it already – intriguing!

January 25, 2016 #

Just finished this at the weekend, can’t wait for the chat!

January 26, 2016 #

Finally got my copy! I’m going to start reading it right now. So how isit going to work on the 15th? Is the discussion going to happen at an specific time? (Sorry if my question is too obvious, but I’ve never taken part in a discussion on a blog!)

I loved the book – saw the ending coming a bit earlier but it didn’t take away from the story at all! I can’t wait to see what the next book is!

I truly enjoyed reading my first sewing mystery book. I love reading and sewing and thank you for the book club.

February 4, 2016 #

I am reading the ebook now and for me it is a little bit harder to read, because my nativ language is Dutch. But so far I really enjoy the book.

February 6, 2016 #

I finished the book this evening. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to the discussion later in the month. I’ve never participated in a book club.

I listened to the book via Audible. The narrator was great. It was a perfect listen to do while sewing.

I’m excited about the new book announcement today ?

I haven’t quite finished it, would love to see the quilt! There’s also a bit of disturbing history on the treatment of the mentally ill–sad.
