Only three weeks ‘til the first Colette Book Club discussion!
A couple weeks ago, we introduced you to the Colette Book Club, an online book club that explores the meaning and making of clothing. We’ll be discussing our first book, The Forgotten Seamstress by Liz Trenow, on February 15. There’s just three weeks left to find and read the book.
How it works
1) Find a copy of our current book, “The Forgotten Seamstress”by Liz Trenow. It’s available in bookstores or at your local library. It’s downloadable in most e-reader formats and as an audiobook. There’s even a free Kindle preview so you can try the first four chapters for free.
2) Read the book. If you want to chat about it while you’re reading, use the hashtag #colettebookclub on Twitter.
3) Come back to the Colette blog on Feb 15 to talk about the book and learn which book is next.
Book 1: The Forgotten Seamstress
Our first book is The Forgotten Seamstress, a lovely novel by Liz Trenow that will delight mystery lovers, textile nerds and fans of Downton Abbey.
This novel tells two stories. The first concerns Caroline Meadows, a 38-year-old Londoner. Caroline is a little depressed—her life is okay, but it’s not working out the way she planned. Then she discovers a beautiful quilt in her mother’s attic. The impeccably worked quilt presents a mystery: no one in Caroline’s family sewed it, and it contains patches of an exquisite century

This one is a pretty fast read! It’s shorter than a lot of other books I’ve looked at for the book club, and the plot moves pretty quickly, too.

I finished it last week. It was my first time reading an e-book, so without the thickness of the pages as an indicator of progress, I was really surprised at how quickly the ending came and was sad to part with the characters. This will also be my first book club. Looking forward to it!

I enjoyed the plot and the characters. The sewing part was like frosting on the cake. I found myself fascinated with David a.k.a. King Edward and looked him up on Google. He wasn’t a very nice man according to what I read I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually did seduce a few innocent women servants. Looking forward to the next book!

I haven’t quite finished it, would love to see the quilt! There’s also a bit of disturbing history on the treatment of the mentally ill–sad.
