Behind the scenes with Laurel

Just wanted to share a few extra behind the scenes shots from our photo shoot with the lovely Jade Sheldon and Cory Burnsed and model Alex Hagel.

And if you missed the short video from the Laurel post on Tuesday, take a look:

Sarai Mitnick

Sarai started Colette back in 2009. She believes the primary role of a business should be to help people. She loves good books, sewing with wool, her charming cats, working in her garden, and eating salsa.

The textures and the colors are almost edible!

such a good shoot!
OT, but are the forums coming back anytime soon?

March 21, 2013 #

I was wondering that too…I just sort of noticed one day that they were missing. But, I couldn’t find any mention of when they went away or why.

The forum link when you go to it says they’re working on a new community site, but I do miss interacting with everyone, and I’m not really all that keen on flickr.

Hey guys, the main reason we had to take down the forum while we redesign a community site is that we were having major major spam problems with it. It was a tough decision, but I’m hoping we can come back with something much better!

those red open toe are drawn me crazy, are adorable!!

The pictures of Alex from Tuesday’s launch are amazing. You always use such beautiful models that fit well into the Colette ethos. I wish the “Laurel girl” much success.

Those red shoes are just amazing. Are they vintage? Pretty pictures and a lovely story!

March 21, 2013 #

The red shoes are Jeffrey Campbell! I got them from Xtabay Vintage here in Portland, one of the absolute best vintage stores out there (and if you click the link, you’ll immediately recognize the model/photographer!)

These are some of my favorite blog posts. I love the “behind the scenes” stuff. I would love to see you do a decorating book!

March 21, 2013 #

I am so eager to get my pattern and get started!

March 21, 2013 #

I like your boots, Sarai!

March 21, 2013 #

Oh thanks! They’re my trusty Frye boots. Super comfortable, great traction, & really sturdy. I’ve been wearing them all Winter!

March 21, 2013 #

The first word that pops into my head is ‘lush.’ Lush plants and flowers and beautiful fabrics. So pretty!

March 21, 2013 #

Super cute pattern. What kind of fabric did you use for the stripe dress that has the sleeve ruffle. Love that one!

March 21, 2013 #

That fabric is a linen gauze with a bit of crinkle to it. It’s very comfy and light, though I think cotton gauze is a bit easier to find.

For those interested, I googled the beautiful model for this shoot and her profile is available online. I wanted to find out how tall she was so that I could see how short Laurel will be on me. For those interested the model is 5’6″. I have an extra 5″ on her at 5’11” so I will need to add a significant amount of length to my version to keep things PG rated :)

March 23, 2013 #

Thank you so much for finding out how tall she is, that does help a lot.

March 25, 2013 #

One other thing I should mention is that the hem has a wide allowance, so it can be let down an inch or two from there as well!

March 21, 2013 #

I’m totally in love with that floral print!

March 22, 2013 #

The video is very evocative of mood, but not actually that helpful in seeing Laurel in action, (although “see Laurel in action” is how it’s introduced on the shop page). I’d be interested in hearing more about why you tried out the video form.

March 22, 2013 #

It was a behind the scenes video. We added it to the shop page because we thought it would be better than no video, and people might enjoy it.

March 27, 2013 #

I love the behind the scenes shots and video.
Just has the feel of being let in on the whole
I like that kind of intimacy with the artist whose
patterns will become my project.

love the Laura dress / blouse!
Would it be figure flattering for plus size apple figure?

April 9, 2013 #

I just bought the Laurel pattern! It will be my second dress to be sewn, and I cannot wait! I have been sewing for almost 1 year now :)

April 12, 2013 #

I love the video for this. I was drawn to it because my blog is called, Behind the Laurel. It is about my trailer studio hidden behind this massive Laurel Bush at my apartment here in Portland. This may just inspire me to get this pattern!:)

Can you please let me know what the floral fabric used for the blouse version is called?! Thank you.

June 10, 2013 #

It was a cotton voile I purchased from Denver Fabrics… I don’t know if they still have it.
