Palette Challenge: Caitlin’s Minty Meringue
After seeing so many cute Meringue skirts in the forum and flickr pool, I knew I should make one for myself. I need some separates and thought this would fit the bill! I decided to make the skirt out of seafoam wool gabardine to stick with my color palette. One thing I really love about this wool gabardine is that it doesn’t wrinkle very much and it was really easy to work with.
As far as fitting, I only had to lightly grade it from one size to another along the hipline. Easy peasy. The scallops are a bit wonky in places because I didn’t step away and take a breather when I should’ve. This pattern is one of the fastest, and dare I say easiest, from the Colette Sewing Handbook.
I was inspired by some of you who used contrasting fabric for the facings. What a great idea! I used this pale rose fabric that may be polyester, I haven’t done a burn test but that’s what I expect it is.
We had some delightfully hot and sunny weather recently and while the skirt is wool, it’s very lightweight so I wore it despite the heat. Plus, I had to get some shots in the sunshine!
Only one more garment and I’ll be finished with my challenge. Three has been a manageable number for me this time around! How about you? How’s your sewing coming along? Anyone else making the Meringue skirt?

It’s amazing how chic this looks with the mint and the open-toe sandals, you’d think that you were the one in Europe… daaaarling!
Scalloping is so hot right now in Europe too! This pattern is bang on trend.
Now that I have a plethora of patterns to get through, I am looking forward to getting my ‘Sew Retro Bombshell’ Dresses finished and I can work my merry way through your lovely book…. I have to finish these as they are BOTH for weddings that I have been invited to and have told my best friends / brides that I’ll be wearing them. Dang blasted hmfphh…
How long did the skirt take to complete BTW?

Thank you! Including the time it took to make the muslin, I’d say it took roughly 4 1/2 hours to make the skirt. But I did do it over a couple of days and not all at once.

I like your top – did you make that too? It looks a bit like a Wiksten ‘Tank’…

Meringue is one of my all-time favourite skirt patterns. I have one in dark stretch denim and wear it at least once a week. Your is so pretty, Caitlin! I love the colour and how you’ve styled it. :)

I love the colour and the pattern! This is on my to-do list too. I like quick easy projects and skirts are so easy to wear as the weather gets warmer.

I have cut mine in dark denim a couple of weeks ago but I haven’t found the time to do the rest – markings transfer and sewing. I am sure I’ll be wearing it a lot. I will put it on my priority list this weekend!

What a fantastic colour on your skirt Caitlin! I’m into bright colours at the moment, so it really speaks to me.
Got my Colette Sewing Handbook yesterday and read all of it! I made a mental note to make a Meringue skirt because it looks totally cute. And it sounds really interesting to make it in denim, I LOVE denim skirts. Anyone has a good picture of the Meringue in denim? Or can I find it on Flickr?
