Hawthorns by Kristen and Rachel
Did you know Hawthorn is the perfect summer travel dress? Sarai was seen looking quite fabulous in her navy Mark Jacob’s Hawthorn while visiting Palm Springs.
Kristen finished her sleeveless dobby version the morning of her flight to the East Coast, and I finished my seersucker version just in time for a jaunt up to Seattle for my birthday.
However, we were too busy having fun to get travel shots of our own. So, here we are in the studio (where you’ll often catch us sitting side by side, wearing our Hawthorns and typing away at our keyboards).
Kristen is Colette’s new Sewing Pattern Developer, and Hawthorn is the first pattern she worked on from the start to finish. Woot!!
After all the test and sample sewing, she can make the dress for herself in 3 hours flat! Well, minus hemming and attaching buttons. This one here was the first version she made for herself, using a light cotton dobby fabric. She made a second version using chambray.
Check out the fun knot themed bias binding she bought from Bolt fabric.
Her favorite thing about the pattern? How flattering it is on curvy figures.
Recognize this lil’ number from our Sew-along? I’m so happy to finally reveal the whole dress!
I was iffy about adding sleeves, but I just adore how they turned out. Especially the bias cut cuff, which helps break up the vertical stripes.
Seriously, I cannot stop myself from swishing in this dress!
What kind of summer adventures have you been on with your Hawthorns?

I love how good it looks on such a range of shapes and sizes. It’s in my sewing queue, but I have never done buttons/buttonholes before, so I’m a little nervous.

I’m working on my third Hawthorn (not counting my peplum muslin)- now I need to plan a trip to parade them Coletterie style. Maybe I’ll shoot down to Portland with them to do (tax-free?!) fabric shopping!

I have no Hawthorn for my summer adventures but I seriously want one now. It seems so well drafted and wearable for so many occassions. It’s on my never-ending wishlist.

Oh man, I’m really loving the Hawthorn pattern… Love the red stripes, and it DOES look like a perfect summer dress! Classic. Do you think it would be easy to alter to a smaller size?

If you are smaller than our size 0 you can very easily grade the pattern down to fit. I did this myself by removing the excess evenly from the side seams, center front, and center back seams. I also did a narrow shoulder adjustment.

I have the Macaron and Violet and I have discovered that size 0 is, most unfortunately, too big for me (except in the bust, where it is too small). A narrow shoulder adjustment might help, though.

The bias binding is adorable on Kristen’s version! I have a similar fabric to Rachel’s and it looks so cute, I might have to make a similar one…

Rachel, you have captured the essence of gamine in your Hawthorn! Bellisima! And I’m actually preferring the sleeved versions overall. Thanks to all of you for continuing to help us see what the dress looks like in different fabric choices. I’m learning a lot.
