Podcast: A Radical Change in Confidence with Jenny Rushmore
The very first episode of Seamwork Radio is live and available for your listening pleasure!
In this first episode, I talked to Jenny Rushmore of Cashmerette and The Curvy Sewing Collective. Jenny has an inspiring story that goes from a childhood full of bullying and isolation to a renewed sense of confidence that she now spreads to other women. I think you’ll enjoy her story.
Seamwork Radio will have new episodes every other week. Future episodes include interviews with a wide range of characters, from men who sew to other pattern designers to folks who have used sewing to help them through some troubling times.
With each new episode, I’ll post the audio here on the blog, along with a link to the show notes. But you can also subscribe (see the bottom of this post for links).

Wow, so exciting to hear your podcast from the very beginning! Very lovely “radio voice,” Sarai, and very professional interviewing and editing/commentary. Can’t WAIT to hear more! FYI, I’ve been sewing and knitting since the 60s. It’s heart-warming to hear the enthusiastic voices of other generations of fiber artists, the skill that never fails.

I loved your show, so well done and wow talk about hitting home now more then ever. I went up and down in weight with depression that went untreated, through all my childhood, most of my insults came from my family, and in school they called me bertha boobs because I started developing at 9 years, and here I am now having to try and find clothes to fit, because I am on high does of steroids and I cant breath so now, I weigh an incredible amount now, and am dying and I cant stand myself, I am so glad you have accomplished, I have some fabric waiting for hubby to get my table cute down, so when I fill well enough I can try and sew my some clothes that hide me and are descent to go to church when I can make it. God bless you, this will be great for the young girls out there, I am 52, and please don’t worry about negative people, I find when you think you know it all, is when you are the stupidest of all, you keep growing and never stop. God bless you.

That was amazing! All my life I’ve struggled with weight issues, always thinking I was fat. I wasn’t, but now I am and at the age of 56 I’m starting to think – You know, I make my own clothes and I like the way they look, my husband loves me, my grandkids think I’m awesome – WHY am I still fussing about my weight?
I think it’s time to move on and enjoy every blessing I’ve been given. Thank you Sarai and Jenny!

Sat down to listen to your first podcast while I sewed and was so mesmerized I got NOTHING done! Good job! That was fascinating. I want to know this woman. I want to know both these women! I can see I need to carve out time for reading: sewing blogs! I haven’t yet begun to explore the on-line world of like-minded sewing people. Thanks for the nudge!
“Sewing people are the best people.” Absolutely true. By October I will be ready for a new project. How about a challenge for the three of us – and anyone else who wants to join us? Nothing big, just a little project that we can do together, apart, and document if we want? Something that encompasses the intersection of our interests. For me, that would be using what already exists in the world. Could be fun. (Insert wiggling eyebrows) Thoughts?

In your sewing book, you have a wonderful chapter on accepting your body as it is. I’ve always felt that it should be required reading for every woman who has been made to feel badly about her body. I would add this podcast to “required listening” for all the women who don’t recognize their beautiful qualities. Good job! I loved it.

You are right Sarai it’s not easy speaking in a certain way while maintaining a conversational tone. I come away from with being inspired and a profound sense of how sewing can enrich your life. This is an engaging and delightful podcast — though you discuss bullying, I loved the positivity that emanated throughout. When you discussed the “I eat cake” campaign at the close, I thought of the shane koyczan poem “trolls,” and admire how the sewing community came together.

I felt really inspired when Jenny talked about reconciling perfectionism with the need to learn by doing when you’re sewing new things. I think it will help me be less worried to jump in and sew – some wonky seams are inevitable!
