What would you like to ask me?

Guess what arrived in the mail to Colette Patterns HQ this week? A video camera!

Many of you have said that you’d like to see some video tutorials, so I got a lovely new camera for just that purpose.*

But Caitlin had a great idea for breaking it in and getting used to doing video. She suggested we do a quick little video Q&A with you guys. You guys ask some questions, and Caitlin will pick a few to ask me.

So… do you have any questions for me? Questions about:

  • the patternmaking process?
  • sewing technique?
  • running a small business?
  • writing a book?
  • why I love cats so much?
  • why I look so goofy in the above photo?

Whatever you want! Leave a question in the comments and we’ll go from there.

* note: the video will be much better quality than the grainy photo above. I just took that with my webcam.

Hi Sarai, Caitlin!

I love your patterns… would love to know how to self-draft a lining when the original pattern doesn’t include one.

Thanks so much,

Catherine

I second this :)

I would love to hear about running a small creative business–what you did beforehand, your motivations, how you got started, and obstacles you encountered. It’s what I want to do someday!

Hi! I would love to hear more info on the pattern-making process. I’m also really interested in how you started the business!

Thanks :)

I’d actually really like to know about the pattern printing process. You probably draft up the patterns by hand but then put them in some computer program? How is it graded for sizes and how do you print it–getting it on the nice pattern paper?

Tilia

August 12, 2011 #

This interests me too, as an experienced pattern drafter by hand the technicalities of computer drafting and grading still mystifies me.

A question I would ask (and ask every experienced sewist) is: How do you choose a fabric for a project? I have such anxiety about this subject, especially since I’m relatively new to garment sewing.

Hi,
I love your blog and style and I’m excited about the possibility of video tutorials :-)

I have a few technical questions about pattern making:
1) How did you choose you sizing system? (and why did you not use the one that’s used by the big 4?)
2) When you develop a new pattern – what size do you draft first? Do you first check your pattern on yourselves?
3) What resource do you recommend for someone who wants to learn grading?

Thank you!
Denise

I’ve always been intrigued with late 1930’s-40’s fashion, so I’m curious to know your places to find vintage inspiration and vintage inspired fabrics.

I ditto Dina Jones…I’ve been sewing a long time and I still quite often pick the wrong fabric for a project and end up very disappointed.

Not a question, but I really love your haircut.

My Question is…. How do you find the time to do it all and still have some life outside of what you do?

What a fun idea! I love hearing about why people do what they do, what made you decide to pursue a business in patternmaking instead of sewing and selling finished garments?

Hi!
I’m actually thinking about going into pattern-making and production on a small business scale myself, and I was wondering what a typical work day was like. Is there any parts of your job you don’t like, and what’s your favorite part?

Diana

August 12, 2011 #

I’m also very interested in how your inspirations get onto paper (that can then be cut out by all of us in a way that looks so great). And do you have some specific tips for people considering starting a small business?

Thanks!

I’m curious to know the answers to the two questions posed by Nicole at #2 and Debi at #4. I assume you use some sort of printing service, but do you hand grade everything, or is this done in a program with some sort of action applied? (Obviously I have never drafted a real pattern for clothing :) )

I’m totally in love with maxi dresses lately, they seem to be everywhere, I’ve been thinking about making a maxi dress from the crepe pattern, with a big beautiful shiny bow at the back, I’m inspired by the look in this vintage simplicity pattern: http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/patterns/sewingpatterns.pl?patternid=7061

What do you suggest I do to turn the crepe into a maxi dress?

Hello! What a fabulous idea on the video! I’m with others here. I’d like to know more about your life before you started up Colette Patterns, and when you decided to take the plunge into starting your own business.

Also – and I think about this one all the time – are you a self-taught seamstress, or do you have some type of training or schooling? I’d love to know how you learned to be as great as you are today!

Can’t wait to see the videos here soon! Take care, Sarai. :)

Totally sewing unrelated things…I’d love to see your tattoo and hear what its significance to you. Also, you do seem very organized with your time and talents. Any tips for the unorganized (like me).

Right now I really want to sew this one dress design, and I think I can do it, but I keep hearing about ‘muslin first’, how difficult boning and piping will be (even though I’ve done piping before..and it wasn’t that bad) , and a few terms that I’ve never heard before, but being self-taught and in a family of people who can’t sew to save their life, I’m sure I know what the things are…just not the names that go with them.
So may I ask you, what do these people mean by sewing something in muslin first? Isn’t that a waste of time and money? and what does fusible interfacing mean?

First of all, absolutely love your designs! Magnificent! My question for you is: When will we be able to see the new patterns for fall? I cannot wait…………………..

I would like to see how you do the flat felled seam on the curved sleeve head of the Negroni shirt – I found it incredibly fiddly. Also, how to do an all in one facing when there is no CB or CF seam opening – that is the neckline and armhole edges to be completely faced on a sleeveless garment – like a tunic. Thanks!!!

Not a question, but the video is a fun idea. BTW, that’s a nice photo of you, different from the rest and says something like happy-happy!

Hi,
I would love to ask… But not necessarily for the video…. If you could think about a dress pattern that is straight thru….. (without a waist….) but at the same time modern… Neckline etc…. But remains of vintage inspiration… A HUGE ask I know…:)
I find straight thru more flattering than a waist… I am sure others must also have this problem…. But most available patterns are just the old fashioned princess line with a high round neck… IYKWIM???? Even straight thru from under the bust line…. And with a cute sleeve…. :)
I do absolutely love your new Book Cover Pattern…. And have been studying it…. And wondered if that dress could be adapted to omit the waist line….???
Just food for thought…..:)

Looking forward to your book! I would love to see a video on how to attach a lining to a camisole type top, such as your Sorbetto. I’ve seen books show a way that you attach the lining at the shoulders and somehow pull the lining through an opening in a seam, then slip stitch the seam closed. I’m not quite getting the process–but if it works, would love to learn it. Thank you!!

I really admire your approach to business. Your website(s) are always kept up to date, and are shown in an cool and appealing way where the information you share is very thorough and informative.

I would love to know more about getting started writing a book as far as how you found an outlet for publishing and how you narrowed down your topic to make it most appealing to your market as well as your interests without duplicating what is already available.

Also, how did you start your pattern business? What were the beginning steps to getting your pattern produced and spreading the word to your market?

I have a (very attractive practical) nursing shirt pattern that I would love to do more with (self drafted). I am really into dresses and would love for it to be a turned into a dress. I am not very technically advanced so I don’t really know how to improve my pattern or how to turn it into a dress. If you want me to send you the pattern and a sample shirt maybe you could take a look.

On the topic of video tutorials, I have searched you-tube for video tutorials and while the ones I have seen are very helpful they just are not that many (for sewing clothing). Your picture tutorial for the curved seem in the Robios dress was very helpful and I absolutely cannot wait to see you do a tutorial on video.

Just thought of a few more: How much of your wardrobe is handmade? Do you ever make clothing from patterns from other designers or the “big 4” pattern companies?

I’m interested to know if the business is now what you originally envisioned it to be, and also regarding your book (which I pre-ordered from Amazon) did you make most of the decisions on what content was included and how it was done?

Thank you very much for asking us what we would like you to cover!

I am a self taught beginner and I still make so many mistakes that I don’t always manage to fix.

I have just finished sewing a cape with a beautiful wool material and I only realized when it was almost finished that the material was with nap! I was so mortified!

Is there a check list of things you should ABSOLUTELY do and check before you start a project… could you write one for mindless sewists like me??

Thank you again, I love the new look of your site!

I’m so very curious- which arm is your tattoo really on? Some pics show the left and some show the right. ” )

I want to know more about sleeves – how to fit and adjust them. I end up with more ease on the front than on the back when I adjust for a full arm. Then what? I have a funny poof on the above my armhole princess seam.

Also, I keep hearing about sewing on the bias, but I’m so scared to end up with a completely form fitted dress that shows every bump. Can you share some tips to talk me off the ledge?

Thanks!

I think the spelling of your name is way cool, but wonder how it’s pronounced?

August 14, 2011 #

How sweet to answer some of our questions!
I’ve bought 4 of your patterns, but made zero.

I’m so hard to fit and know that I should make muslins… the question is: Do I make the muslin out of the same fabric that I want the finished garment to be in, instead of gingham or muslin… and then, how can I make that cost efficient?

Claire

Lot’s of good ideas here already. I just wanted to agree with the others who commented – what a lovely photo of you this is!

August 14, 2011 #

More pattern adjustments, please.

Large bust adjustment, check. Small bust adjustment, check. General size adjustments, check.

What about short people?

What do you do if you have a very short torso? We’re talking hip-to-hairline being two feet (mmm or less), and still maintain the shaping for the waist. (Hence the muslin on my mannequin for over 4 months)

Why Collette? I am always interested in the reasons behind naming process/choices. Also, how long did it take for your business to evolve from concept to form? Finally, where do you see your business going in the future?

Thx, Jaq

Is there a trick to quickly removing stitches when you make a mistake? I feel that if I could just remove the bobbin stitches I could remove all the stitches at once, but I don’t know how to do this without cutting each stitch with the seam-ripper.

Thanks for your help! I am new to your site, but I like what I see so far!

Totally not sewing related, as many have already asked things I’d be interested in hearing (fabric choices for garments, the ins and outs of small business start-up/ownership, pattern making for others etc.).

However, I’d love to get a good look at your breathtaking sleeve. And also hearing what the inspiration for that piece was, if it’s anything you care to share.

This is such a cool idea. Previous comments cover much of what interests me..the professional pattern making process and running a small business. I’d also be keen to learn how the heck you get them into PDF format such as the Sorbetto top.
Thank you for being so generous with your time and expertise.

I’d like to ask you if you can post the construction technique for pants – from start to finish. OR how to do contoured waistbands … That would be totally AWESOME and a great help for an audio visual person like me!

I’ve gotten into the habit of tracing all my patterns rather than cutting the original. I use pattern tracing material I got from Nancy’s Notions, but whether I use this or tissue paper, I can’t figure out what to use that won’t bleed through the material onto the pattern below. Any suggestions?
