Join us in supporting equality this Vday

cinnamon-for-marriage-equality

I’ve never been into Valentine’s day.

I mean, I like the idea of celebrating love. And the imagery is awesome. In fact, I love old-fashioned valentines so much, they partly inspired my half sleeve. And pink? It’s my favorite color.

But in practice? Valentine’s day seemed to be all about using gifts to “prove” your love. Not only that, but it seemed all about enforcing norms and (sadly) leaving people out.

As I get older, I’ve started mellowing a bit on the ole’ vday. Those reservations remain, but I’ve begun to realize that holidays like this can be anything you want them to be. In fact, it can serve as a useful reminder about the importance of love and commitment. I don’t mean just romantic love, but love in all its forms, including compassion for those around us.

I’ve been trying to think about what I could do this year to express that and to celebrate love with all of you. I decided on a wee little fundraiser in support of something I believe strongly in: equal marriage for all.

Support Freedom to Marry

Today only, when you buy the Cinnamon pattern (available as an instant download), 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Freedom to Marry.

Please feel free to also post about this on your blog or facebook, email your sewing friends, tweet, or anything else to show your support.

Now, a footnote: I’ve closed comments on this post because I am aware that there are people out there who do not support equal marriage for my LGBT friends and family. You are entitled to your views, but I don’t believe this is the appropriate place for them. Everyone here has always shown a tremendous amount of respect, so please respect the people I love.

ETA: I realized that my footnote made it sound like I closed comments because there was some nasty comment or something. Not at all! I just didn’t want to derail the conversation, so I closed comments preemptively. Sorry for being unclear!
