Help me name the blog!
Guys, I’d like your help. I’m thinking about giving the blog a name. So far, it’s just been called “the Colette Patterns blog,” and that’s a bit unwieldy and not very interesting, in my opinion.
However, I seem to have a bit of a creative block on this issue. For the life of me, I can’t think of a suitable blog name! So I thought I’d turn it over to all you lovely folks. I’d really like to hear your ideas, so I’m sweetening it with a prize for the winning name.
Just post your ideas in the comments (as many blog names as you want), and be sure to fill in your email so I can contact you. The winning idea (as judged by me and the rest of the CP team) will get two free patterns of their choice. And if people inadvertently post the same awesome winning idea, I’d choose the first person to post it.
Some guidelines:
- It might be nice for the name to have some reference to sewing / creating / making, but…
- As much as I love puns, I’m thinking there are a lot of sewing puns out there already (e.g. “sew cute”), so definitely move away from those.
- It should ideally match with the rest of the company! Maybe that’s obvious, but I’m looking for something that reflects what you see on the blog.
- It should probably be pretty short and catchy
There, is that too much to ask? Ha!
Ok, let’s hear your ideas! I’ll keep comments open until Monday, Feb 14.

Great suggestions so far! I especially love “de Colette”. I came up with quite a few last night, here are my top 5:
The Colette Bias
Colette Remnants
Threads (as in threads of conversation)
Deli-Colette or Delicate Colette
Charming Colette or Colette Charm
And some others that didn’t make the top 5:
Exquisi-Colette or Exquisite Colette
Dainty Colette
Ethereal Colette
The Colette Record
Beguiling Colette
Colette Applique
Intimate Colette
Colette in Bloom(ers)

Names are tough! I got mine (“refurl”) by combining the name of my graphic design senior exit project (“unfurl”) with the idea of remaking what starts as a piece of fabric into something else or remaking one clothing item into something totally different. Do you have any memorable creative moment/name you can pull from? It’s always fun when it’s personal.

“The Satin Slip”, “The Satin Soliliquy”, “The Dress Forum”, “The Sweetest Thing”, “The Girl Next Door”.
In previous decades, titles started with the word “the”. eg. The Supremes, The Four Tops, etc. In recent decades the word “the” has been dropped. I think it would add a nice vintage ring to the title just by starting with “the”.

Hello! Here are my ideas. A few of them are inspired by Colette the French author. My favorite is the first one:
1. The Blue Lantern
2. Life a la mode
3. Season Savor Sew
4. Colette Colette
5. The Evening Star
6. L’etoile Vesper
The first is the name of a memoir by Colette. The second is “life in fashion” but also reminds me of ice cream, yum! The third is alliterative and refers back to many of the pattern names being seasonings/spices/teas/exotic locations, etc. The fourth relates strongly to the company name (duh) but is perhaps slightly catchier than the current blog title. The fifth is also the name of a Colette memoir. The sixth is the original French title of the same book. There might be a possible pun with toile, but I’ll leave that for folks with better French than mine. :-)
Where does the name of the company come from, by the way? Thanks!
Christine

I clearly didn’t read the other comments first, I definitely agree with the idea of putting a description of the company name somewhere, perhaps as a page in the blog or part of the about me section of the blog?

Here’s my two cents:
Amuse Bouche – relating to the food, tea, and liquer influence in your pattern names
However, I have to say I like it being referenced simply as the Colette Patterns blog because it’s great simple advertising, and any other name will have to bring a description to it the first time it’s used, like “Amuse Bouche, the Colette Patterns blog ” or “Dart & Hem, the Colette Patterns blog”.

I like the idea of naming the blog something elegant without being harsh, feminine without being too cutesy/girly, and something that mentions sewing/creating without being a pun. Anyway, good luck with choosing the name!

I’m new to your blog (having hopped here from angry chicken). Don’t have much to add to the good ideas already suggested, but perhaps: A Cut Above. Suggests a higher quality line of products and well, I guess cutting is related to sewing but not necessarily a pun in this context. Eh. Maybe I’ll think of something better …

My favorite suggestion so far is “Colette a la Mode”. Sweets and fashion! More along those lines:
“Colette’s Bonbons”
“Bonbons and Bon Mots”
“L’apéritif”
I think you could work out something that is a play on windows – being that your studio has wonderful windows, cats like Colette love windows, and the blog is a window into bits of history, inspiration and techniques that make your company tick. Here a few words that are floating around my head:
Glace – French for window-glass, also meaning covered with sugar/frosting glaze like a pastry or candied fruit
Vitrine – glass, like a shop window or display case

That’s all I have, I have tried several others, but I just love this, I think it has a lovely ring and the catch phrase underneath reminds me of old time picnics where the ladies wore beautiful dresses (like your patterns) and hats and were courted by men whilst their minders looked on. Goodluck finding the perfect name.

I would suggest “Colette par le chas de l’aiguille” which means “Colette through the needle’s eye” in French.
As chas (eye) s is pronounced the same way as chat (cat), it refers to the origin of Colette’s name.
Does that make any sense?

How about something that is associated with Colette without using the same name as the website – like “Bel-Gazou” (nickname of Colette’s daughter) or “Sido”?

February 10, 2011 #
oh, names are hard! i actually like how it is now but i understand where you’re coming from (and i have a bad habit of changing up names for my sites/blogs so…)
i don’t have a complete title (does that disqualify my comment? that’s ok, just wanting to be helpful!) but something with “fancy pants” comes to mind. frocks? ;)
or something having to do with pinking shears – sounds retro, has the word “pink” in it and, of course, has to do with sewing.

Hi,
your blog makes me thinks of a “salon de thé”. It’s like a cosy place where you could come and talks about whatever you want about sewing, fabrics, vintages patterns…
So i suggest this name :

I was thinking of “petits points” whoch in french are the words of sewing when you make small stitches on finishing a garment.
Or perhaps ” vintage minette”. In french minette is both a word that describe a woman which takes great care to her garments and look, being also really feminine. And it is also used to call a female cat when you do not know its name. As Colette is originally a cat and as the blog deals with really feminine clothes, details.. I thought it could work
