Colette Patterns around the world
This one’s for all the other data visualization nerds. I know you’re out there.
I wanted to share these cool map visualizations Kenn made recently.
This first one above shows places in the world that we’ve shipped patterns to. The blue-green countries are places that we’ve shipped patterns to for direct customers, like you guys. The pink countries are places where we ALSO have shops that carry our patterns.
Here’s a list of them, all 66 countries on 6 continents. The countries with the asterisk are the places that also have shops with our patterns. I find it so exciting to look at this.
- Angola
- Argentina
- Australia *
- Austria
- Barbados
- Belgium *
- Benin
- Brazil
- Canada *
- Chile
- China
- Colombia
- Croatia
- Czech Republic
- Denmark
- Estonia
- Finland
- France *
- Germany *
- Greece
- Guyana
- Haiti
- Hong Kong
- Hungary
- Iceland
- India
- Indonesia
- Ireland *
- Israel
- Italy
- Japan
- Latvia
- Lebanon
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
- Malaysia
- Malta
- Martinique
- Mexico
- Netherlands *
- Netherlands Antilles
- New Zealand *
- Nigeria
- Norway
- Oman
- Philippines
- Poland
- Portugal
- Puerto Rico
- Qatar
- Reunion
- Romania
- Russia
- Singapore *
- South Africa *
- South Korea
- Spain *
- Sweden *
- Switzerland
- Taiwan *
- Thailand
- Trinidad and Tobago
- Turkey
- United Kingdom *
- United States *
- Vietnam
Kenn also wanted to make a map to show states we’ve shipped patterns to within the US. But since we’ve shipped to all 50 states, it would be a pretty boring map.
So he created this one instead, which shows the number of patterns sold in each state, with darker colors indicating more customers.
I was a little sad at first that Oregon is so light, but then I remembered that not many people live here compared to California or New York, so it’s ok… I guess.
If you know of any shops interested in carrying our patterns, send them over to our wholesale application. We’re happy to add more to the growing family.

How exciting! I am also an infographic nerd. :)
And I can see that I’m in good company in California with fellow Colette pattern buyers!

Nice!
Regarding the US map, perhaps you can relate it to to a per capita number…. like the number of customers per 1000 women. Then it might put your numbers in a more realistic frame for comparison of popularity across states.

Kenn says he considered it, but was too lazy. I’ll work on him, because I’d love to see that too.

I’d also love to see it, as an Oregonian I wonder if we’re representing – maybe he could just do it for the west coast?

Ohhhh wonderful!!!! You have to see a way to translate your patterns in spanish and you can hit more countries in America….. I can’t hardly wait to see Peru in pink!!!!

I’d love to offer translations! It’s one of those things we really want to do, but has been on the back burner a little while since it’ll take some work. But we’ve always had so many international customers that it really makes sense.

You need a US one as a percentage of state population, then you’ll get an accurate ‘darkness’!

this is really cool! but do you have a list of the shops that stock your patterns – I had a quick look at the site but I couldn’t see it. I’m particularly interested in Irish stockists if I’m honest – thanks.

Sorry you had trouble finding it (it’s the “stockists” link in the sidebar of the shop):
https://www.colettepatterns.com/stockists
It’s not totally up to date, but has most of them. One thing is that some shops in the US buy through a distributor, so we don’t get to see their info or put it on our site, unfortunately.

Maybe I’ll put in a word today at my sewing center. :)

I’m actually really surprised that my state was one of the darker ones–I’ve bought a couple myself, but I didn’t think there were that many people that sewed clothes in Delaware!

I am a data visualization nerd! I think what’s cool about these maps is it’s also indicative of what places in the US have more sewists (especially if you do percentages), and what (mostly English-speaking) countries have women with the opportunity to sew. So cool!

Nice charts!
No shops, but clients in Malta:)… I’ve bought from you direct and also from sewbox, and my only sewing friend has bought your patterns from Sewbox:)

Hey! I’m glad to see some dark areas around Chicago. Maybe we can get a stop on your next tour????

I would love to! I’ve never been to Chicago and have always wanted to go. And Kenn was born in Illinois too!

I guess I was unaware of my data visualization nerdiness! This makes me so happy! 66 countries loving garment sewing and Colette Patterns in particular! What a triumph for you and for sewing as a whole!
Agree that a US map by population would be very interesting. :)

I’m an American living in Beijing and I was very happy to see China in blue-green! I usually pick up patterns when I am on holiday in the US or Europe as the local postal system isn’t all that reliable. While I have access to a wonderful wholesale fabric market, patterns are difficult to find. I’m going to have to seek out your patterns in Taiwan on my next visit there!

Hi! I see South Africa as one of the countries where yu are stocked, but didn’t see a listing in your stockist list. Where in SA can I buy Colette off the shelf? Yay from very excited data nerd!

Sarah, Kenn looked into it and says he thinks that retailer might have closed up shop? Hopefully a new one will take its place. You should pass our info along to any shops in your area that you think might be interested!

You can add another country to your list: I have a few of your patterns and I live in Slovenia (between Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia). A friend of mine bought them for me in the States, however, because it was simpler than ordering, so it’s true they weren’t shipped directly :)
