Win a copy of Sewing in a Straight Line by Brett Bara

I met Brett Bara at Quilt Market in October, author of the book Sewing in a Straight Line. I knew right away that we were on the same page when it comes to sewing and craftiness, but it wasn’t until I looked at her blog and saw her posts on cats and smoothies that I knew for sure she was a woman after my own heart.

Brett sent me a copy of her lovely book, and I thought I’d share it with you all.

As a person that sews, you probably hear friends and family say they’d like to learn to sew, but don’t know where to start. Sometimes encouraging friends to get started presents a bit of a challenge. You know that you should recommend some straightforward, easy projects for them to get started and boost their confidence, but most easy projects are a bit boring. It’s hard to get excited about them.

That’s where this book comes in. With lovely, clean, modern photography and pretty styling, the simple home and garment projects in Sewing in a Straight Line actually look like things you’d want to make! What a breath of fresh air, and a great way to ease a beginner into the world of sewing. Or for the more experienced sewist to get some instant gratification.

Would you like to win a copy of this book? Simply leave a comment and let me know what your favorite easy, simple, of quick gratification project is. I’ll choose a winner at random on Wednesday, Jan 26th.

I’ll start! My favorite simple project is making napkins and tea towels. They’re so fast, cute, and useful both every day and when you’re entertaining. What about you?

Update: Congrats to JP, who won (via random number generator) with her comment:

“Baby blankets! Just a big square of flannel: finish the edges and you’re good to go!”

I covet this book so much! I’m on a bit of a sewing high at the moment and neglecting all my other work and things to do in the process!
I love to make cushion covers, they’re so quick and easy and can change the lok of your room instantly. I’ve just started experimenting with patchwork which takes a little longer but still a nice, quick project!

Love your blog, work and ideas Coletterie!

I learned how to sew by making a supereasy tunic. It was with Raglan sleeves, so putting them in wasn’t even hard. I was so proud when I finished it! Nowadays I do prefer skirts, because you can make a great skirt in a couple hours, and the feeling when people ask you “where did you get it” and you can reply by “I made it myself”… is awesome!

I really enjoy making table runners and mats. I also whizz through microwaveable heat packs. Some of my little projects are gifted, and some are donated to my local hospice shop.

I mostly use thermal backed curtain fabric, purchased in bundles of colour co-ordinated remnants from my local “Women’s DIY shop” (that’s what they call themselves – neat name huh? I find it sits beautifully, and is very easy to work with. Some are of course are self-patterned, along with some plain, and I like to embellish the plain ones with a simple braid or ric rac.

I also enjoy making themicrowaveable calico heat packs – dried corn filling – and I make 2 washable little envelope cases with each one. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and started making them for myself, and then my friends who saw them wanted one!!

These are two of my “instant gratifications” when I haven’t got a garment going that takes more concentration – and skills that I am still learning. This book looks like an excellent encouragement for me to learn more new skills!! Thanks for the opportunity!!

When my daughter finally showed some interest in sewing (after she was away at college) I started her out with an apron. It gave her lots of practice in sewing a straight line – which is not as easy as it sounds. It also gave us a chance to discuss appropriate fabrics for a project. And lastly, there are some really fun apron patterns out there these days.

A quick and rewarding project? Making a grocery bag from an old tanktop… Really easy, but my sewing skills don’t yet allow much more, I’m still a beginner :-) So that book would really, really help me to create more with my sewing machine!

By making pj pants, I can choose a unique fabric design and if I do screw up or make a mistake, it’s ok….only I will know it’s there! Sewing is turning out to be a creative, relaxing outlet I am getting hooked on. Lovin’ it.

My fave quick & easy project is a bias cut cotton &/or linen scarf. Layer 2 fabrics, make a bias cut or cuts to equal the scarf length you desire. Right sides together, leave an opening, sew, turn & topstitch. Be sure to press well all pieces before, during and after. The bias cut pieces will drape much more nicely than straight cut but you could certainly straight cut if you prefer.

I have recently fallen in love with drawstring bags – I have been knocking out variations from simple pouches to kids backpacks and wine bottle sized bags with straps for carrying to picnics…

Aside from that I love making little girls aprons, with a slightly dated feel – bib fronts and gathered skirst and long straps for tying in bows (just like this http://bygaenor.blogspot.com/2011/08/retrospective-i-aprons.html). Takes maybe an hour, once I have my head on straight.

My go-to project lately has been cozy eye pillows, filled with flax seed and lightly scented. I’ve given them as gifts and made a couple combo packs of eye pillows and larger hot/cold packs for a silent auction to benefit a military function. I heard they went over very well! I just love the eye pillows! I kept one for myself and use it all the time. I made the first couple of eye pillows in the shape of a sleep mask but then decided on the rest of them to make just a rectangle, long enough to cover a face from temple to temple. This way, it can also be used on other parts of the body (a warmed up, peppermint-scented pillow feels fantastic on the back of the neck after a long day).
Thank you for the chance to win a terrific gift!

I love the books I have collected to help me learn to sew. This new book”Sewing In a Straight Line” reminds me of my own Mother talking to me as I tried sewing prior to her death. She was great at sewing, and also a wonderful artist. I have, since her death, been trying to “Sew in a Straight Line” so I can make my granddaughters wonderful blankets, dresses, etc. like my Mom did as I grew up. She literally made 99% of my clothes. My own children, which are now boys in their twenties, love homemade long sleep pants from flannel. As I sew, which is nothing to brag about,( but they do,) I think in my head as my Mom would say,”Just sew slowly and in a straight line!” This book has intrigued me since I first saw it on one of the online bookstores and I believe that my Mom would be thrilled for me to have it, and I know that I would benefit from the knowledge it imparts. I thank you in advance for the chance to participate in this contest. Sincerely, Kathy Brinkman

My favorite ‘straight line’ project so far has been these towels that I made for family as Xmas gifts. http://pinterest.com/pin/176695985349840242/ They turned out to be a little more work than I anticipated, because of the snaps and just the sheer volume of cutting and sewing, but it was totally worth it!
