Pretty package

I have a lot of little vintage notions and things, and sometimes I feel like I could just spend all day sorting them and staring at the pretty packaging. Did you know that here in Portland we have a craft supply thrift store? (!) I have such a weakness.

Anyway, I came across these bright and cheerful photos of torn packaging on Flickr, taken by Pikaluk, and it just reminded me of coming across half-used notions like this and wondering what was made or mended with the pieces that are missing.

Oh, I love vintage notions almost as much as I love shoes!! LOL. I just inherited my grandmother’s button box, and I’m having a lot of fun going through it. I even have some “what is this?” objects.

I love that those hook-and-eyes were made by a company that was appointed by the Queen….who knew the English would take their sewing notions so seriously? ;-)

I have a little stash of vintage, half-used notions packets that I like to use both for decoration and on projects. They’re so pretty and colorful–can’t beat the lovely packaging design either! :)

Wow, a craft thrift store! How cool is that? I love the packaging of old notions.

Wish we had a crafty store like that in Chicago…I’d say the next best thing would be the Harlem Avenue Antique Shoppe where the old buttons, buckles, etc. are sorted by color…and there’s tons of vintage fabric. I wish they’d stock some yarn!

As for the notions themselves, I like how our thrifty ancestors would save even a corner of a hook and an eyes tablet for future use…..

Oh what a lovely idea – a craft thrift store. The Harlem Avenue shop sounds fascinating too.
I love rummaging (looking and sorting stuff) in charity shops here in the UK. It is surprising what delights can be found. I have a lovely collection of vintage haberdashery items too. Its great fun to handle them, and sometimes, even get to use them too.

On a different topic, I have a question for you. When I read about how to sew clothing, all the books talk about making a muslin, usually starting with a dressmaking pattern. The problem is (well, the first, there are probably many) that my books tend to be rather vintage and the commercial patterns they suggest seem to be out of print. Is there a commercial dressmaking pattern you could recommend for a novice sewer for this purpose? I’ve dreamed of making my own clothes for most of my life and it’s time to either get on with it or give up the dream. I’ll be very grateful for any advice you might give. I’m most likely to see a comment on my blog. Thanks.
