Pattern of the Month: The Lily Dress

Three years ago I was working and teaching at a little sewing shop in Los Angeles aptly named Sew L.A. It was a hot summer, and we had moved from a small upstairs location, to a street level space a few miles away. Though this space was gorgeous, it did not boast a functioning AC at first. I had completely surrendered to the heat and resigned myself to wearing the same 3 cotton sundresses for the rest of the year.

Then the proverbial clouds parted and Colette released a hot weather trifecta. Lily, Hazel, and Iris were a shining beacon of hope. Hope that style did not have to be abandoned for the sake of avoiding heat stroke.

I have made all three of these lovelies, and even taught Hazel as a class. Lily though, has always had a special place in my heart. It’s vintage style is swoon worthy and the shape is so flattering.

I am beyond excited that this month we will be celebrating Lily Month!

In honor of this vintage style dress, I have rounded up a some lovely vintage dresses to get the creative juices flowing.

1) A pink linen two piece ensemble that begs to be accessorized with a mojito.
2) An eyelet border like the one this dress features would be lovely applied to a Lily.
3) Make your Lily out od a playful floral like this vintage dress.
4) Sew a more formal Lily out of a gorgeous silk like this 1950s day dress.
5) I adore the idea of sewing Lily as part of a feminine suit set like this suit by Mollie Parnis.
6) There are few things that say summer quite like a white eyelet dress like this one from Adored Vintage.
7) This linen cocktail dress is subtilely adorned with rhinestones.
8) The winding soutache detail on this yellow dress is so stunning.
9) The vertical stripes featured in this dress are so fun and summery.
10) Monochromatic lace detail make this dress special, without being too over the top.
11) The Lily dress is very reminiscent of this McCall’s pattern from 1955.
12) The use of fabric on this rose printed dress is genius.

Lily is currently marked down to just $9, but through the end of the month you can get Lily for 15% off the sale price when you use the code LILYMONTH at check out.

Stayed tuned this month for tutorials and a pattern hack!

I love this pattern and the directions are so good! I’d love to know how to add some contrasting fabrics and even a small bow to it. Oh and how about a nice belt?

Is there not a sale on the PDF pattern?

I love this pattern (I just made my second (albeit modified) Lily last week ) and I think (well, that’s only a personal opinion) the sewing world has not given it all the love it deserves. I can’t wait to see which kind of hacks you guys are going to propose!

Hmm…how about showing us how to modify the neckline into a sweetheart instead of a square neckline?

It is not showing as discounted :(. There is only the regular sale price on the printed pattern, the one that was already there. It’s a shame, I really wanted the pdf one, shipping and customs are horribly slow in my country
