fall palette challenge: caitlin’s moodboard

Hi there! How’s your inspiration search going? I’ve put together my mood board for the Fall Palette Challenge using a bunch of images from my Pinterest boards. For this challenge I’m going to keep the number of garments down to four. As much as I’d love to make a bunch of things for myself, I think that four is a reasonable number for me. Especially since one of things I’m making is a coat!

I’m planning on making a dress, scarf, pair of pants and a short coat. The coat is going to take the longest but it’ll be worth it. I’ve already found the perfect caramel wool from Pendleton and now I’m looking for some great buttons to go with it. As for the dress and pants, the perfect fabrics have yet to be found but I’m pretty certain a dig through my stash will come up with something good.

My palette colors are red, camel, navy and grey. For this challenge, I found inspiration in classic styles with bold colors and accessories. I love red as an accent color, especially red shoes. I’m thinking I’ll make the dress in either a warm grey or some kind of floral like in the photo. As for making red pants, we shall see! That would be quite a bright color for me and I’m not sure if I could pull it off. What do you think? Are you trying something new with this challenge or creating a bunch of great basics? Be sure to share your moodboards in the forum!

You can pull off red pants! I think red in big blocks like pants, read more neutral to the eye, and even if they’re fitted, the bold color can help disguise some of your pet figure flaws too. I just made a red and hot pink floral bias skirt, and as bold as it is, it does anything but make my bottom half bigger- even with the cling and swing of the bias! Go for it!

Thanks, Laura! Maybe I will go for red pants after all. There’s just something really fun about them.

Ah Caitlin, my sewing mojo has been lying dormant and your mood board strikes like a hot iron!! I LOVE your choices. And your color palette is a familiar one to me as I’ve used those colors often. They are such versatile colors that can go in many directions with more colors.
Thanks for the inspiration.

I’m enjoying the mood posts, even though I’m not participating. I haven’t actually sewn more than a simple shirt as far as garments go, but I’ve already bought a couple of your patterns and tons of fabric to try. I’m about 40lb. overweight at the moment so I want to make sure I feel good in what I make so I’ll probably go with a darker color. Those red jeans reminded me of the red leather boots I wore many years ago.

I wrote a blog post yesterday about my fall palette! I’ve chosen yellow, dark blue, turquoise and grey. Looking forward to getting started!

Hi! I am so glad you are sharing your mood board as well. I don’t remember you doing that with the Spring challenge?

I am a fellow redhead and if it is the redhair clashing with the red pants that you are worried about (it kept me from wearing red for awhile) then don’t fear! I get so many compliments when I wear red!

Love your mood board!

These are amazing colours. So vivid! They will suit you fantastically, especially red trousers. And I love those buttons! They match a pair of 40s earrings I have, I might just have to buy them…

Are you designing your own coat pattern? I’ve been thinking of sewing one up myself, too!

Hey Rachel! Yes, I have a really cute short coat from the 60s that I want to replicate, so I’ve got to make a pattern for it. First coat pattern for me!

WOW! I absolutely love this color combo. All of these mood boards are making me want to step up to this challenge. What is the time frame for all of this again? I’m going to go take a look…

I love this palette! It’s very similar to the colors that I’m sewing with now. And I LOVE the coat. I’d really like to make a coat, but I’m put off by the expense of the fabric and the time it would take to make it. I’m excited to see how yours turns out, though!
